More on Isstories:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide among adolescents in the U.S. is a leading cause of death – and it occurs in children as young as 10 years of age.  Risk factors include depression and other mental disorders, substance abuse, a prior suicide attempt, or a family history of suicide. Other risk factors encompass family abuse or violence in the home, guns in the home or incarceration, and exposure to suicide.

Teen suicide crosses all social and economic backgrounds. It affects all genders and ethnic populations. Suicidal ideation may be triggered by any number of factors. Equipping teens with the knowledge, tools, and strategies is an effective way to recognize and reduce teen suicide.

The not-for-profit SPTS was founded 18 years ago to support parents, teens, schools, and professionals. The SPTS develops programs, and online training and teaches skills that adolescents need. Through its unique and specialized efforts, the SPTS has gained national recognition for its success and New Jersey has a lower teen suicide rate than the rest of the nation.

The B-Swell Summits sponsored by SPTS are an opportunity for anyone to get involved in the efforts to prevent teen suicide and obtain essential education. SPTS teaches teens and adolescents resiliency and coping strategies they can utilize throughout their lifetime. SPTS is a safe place for teens to share their feelings, parents to obtain information, and professionals to aid in the fight to combat teen suicide and preserve American youths.

About STPS:
The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, Inc. (SPTS) is a 501(c)3 public charity, incorporated on January 18, 2005.  The organization was founded by two Monmouth County, New Jersey fathers who each experienced the devastating loss of a teenage child by suicide.  SPTS is dedicated to increasing awareness, saving lives, and reducing the stigma of suicide through specialized training programs and mental health resources that empower students, parents, school staff, and community members with the skills needed to help youth build a life of resiliency. Many organizations address mental health needs across the entire age spectrum, however, SPTS is the only organization focused solely on comprehensive youth suicide prevention for ages 5-18. SPTS utilizes a holistic approach, centered on evidence-based, best practices programming to build communities where everyone is concerned about the welfare of all members of their community, is committed to an environment that supports the common good, and knows how and where to get help if someone is in need. The array of programs offered by SPTS targets the network around a young person. Keep updated with SPTS by following us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
