Controversial Evangelical Critic to Attend Local Film Debut

The 90-minute film is an in-depth examination of the rise of Christian Nationalism as a potent religiopolitical movement favoring Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy as it promotes Q-anon and other conspiracy theories.

Featured in the film are numerous religious commentators, many of them evangelical, a sub-group particularly susceptible to the message of Christian Nationalism. One such evangelical is the Reverend Dr. Rob Schenck of Alexandria, Virginia, who will attend Friday’s 7:10 PM film showing at the Regal in Arlington. Schenck spent 30 years as a right-wing evangelical political activist on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, before he left the movement and became one of its fiercest critics. In the film, Schenck calls Christian Nationalism America’s greatest threat to our democratic experiment” and Donald Trump “everything a Christian should not be.”

Schenck made headlines last year after a New York Times front-cover story exposed his work behind the scenes to personally woo conservative justices on the Supreme Court to render extreme opinions benefiting the right-wing social, religious, and political agenda. He later testified about the clandestine undertaking he Schenck dubbed “Operation Higher Court,” which included an account of his involvement in a 2014 leak of another abortion-related case by Justice Samuel Alito, Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the effect of which greatly benefitted the anti-abortion movement.

Schenck will be available before and after Friday night’s film screening. He and his supporter friends will move to a local restaurant for a post-viewing on-the-record conversation about the film’s content over food and drinks.
