(Isstories Editorial):- Las Vegas, Nevada Feb 9, 2026 – Author, chaplain, and emotional intelligence advocate Jodi LaRae Cunningham delivered a TEDx talk titled Breaking Point, exploring the emotional reality of family estrangement and a path toward healing through peace, time, and healthy expectations.
In her talk, Cunningham shares her experience with generational estrangement, including seven years without contact from close family members. Rather than centering the conversation on blame or forcing reconciliation, she reframes estrangement as a painful but meaningful experience that can lead to deeper self-awareness and peace.
Cunningham cites research that suggests roughly 27% of families experience estrangement, and she highlights why common advice often fails people living through it. She offers a grounded framework rooted in emotional intelligence, compassion, and classical philosophy.

In Breaking Point, Cunningham outlines three guiding “lampposts” for healing:
Time – allowing perspective and truth to emerge over time
Healthy, kind expectations – expectations that are known, compassionate, and feasible
Virtues – understanding how strengths can turn into vices when taken to extremes
“Estrangement doesn’t mean failure,” Cunningham shares. “Within it, there can be protection, wisdom, and peace.”
Cunningham is the author of Estrangement: Healing for Mothers & Daughters, and a licensed chaplain committed to helping individuals navigate grief, boundaries, emotional resilience, and acceptance.
