Terence Flotte, MD, to be Recognized as the 2026 Larry Zaroff Man of Good Conscience

(Isstories Editorial):- New York City, New York Jan 22, 2026 (Issuewire.com) – Terence Flotte, MD, Dean, Provost, and Executive Deputy Chancellor at the University of Massachusetts Chan School of Medicine, will be presented with the Larry Zaroff Man of Good Conscience Award from the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) at the 111th Annual AMWA Meeting in San Francisco in March.

The AMWA Larry Zaroff Man of Good Conscience Award is presented annually to a man who has been a champion and supporter of women in medicine. Dr. Larry Zaroff was a mentor to generations of physicians, medical students, and pre-medical students. A cardiac surgeon and later humanities professor at Stanford, he was an avid supporter of women in medicine at all stages of their careers. His well-known courses always presented a special session devoted to the issues and challenges faced by women in medicine. AMWA Executive Director Eliza Lo Chin, MD, established this award to honor Dr. Zaroff’s commitment to the advancement of women in medicine.

“Dr. Terence Flotte exemplifies what it means to be a man of good conscience–using his leadership, influence, and moral clarity to advance gender equity and expand opportunity in academic medicine. Through deliberate action and sustained commitment, he has transformed institutional culture and created pathways for women leaders to thrive, embodying the values at the heart of this award,” says Dr. Susan Hingle, AMWA Immediate Past President and 2026 Awards Chair.

Over this same time, the number of endowed chairs at UMass Chan increased from 26 (11.5% women) to 82 one-third of whom are women.

Internationally known for his work in gene therapy, Dr. Flotte led the first successful human gene transfer using adeno-associated virus (AAV) and has since pioneered clinical trials for diseases such as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and Tay-Sachs disease. Under Dr. Flotte’s leadership, UMass Chan has become a leader in translational science and biomedical innovation. He established new departments and centers in RNA Therapeutics, Bioinformatics, and Digital Medicine, helping more than double the universityâs research funding since 2007.
