Dr. Sharonne Hayes to Receive the Lila A. Wallis Lifetime Achievement Award for Advancing Women’s Health

Hayes, MD, FACC, FAHA, Professor and Founder of the Women’s Heart Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, will be presented with the Lila A. Wallis Women’s Health Award from the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) at the 111th Annual Meeting in San Francisco in March.

The Lila A. Wallis Award is given in the name of one of AMWA’s most beloved Past Presidents. Each year, the award is given to an individual whose lifetime achievements, accomplishments, motivation, mentorship, energy, and enthusiasm for women’s health, education, and research reflect the trailblazing achievements and influences in women’s health exemplified by Dr. Lila A. Wallis.

Dr. Hayes is a Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Vice Chair of Academic Advancement and Faculty Development, as well as Founder of the Mayo Women’s Heart Clinic, and Director of the Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Her career is dedicated to advancing women’s cardiovascular health and sex-based medicine.

She served as Mayo Clinic’s inaugural Director of Diversity and Inclusion (2010-2020), implementing strategies to enhance equity in patient care and the workforce. Her leadership in developing programs for women and minority physicians earned her the 2017 American Heart Association (AHA) Women in Cardiology Mentoring Award. She has made significant contributions to national women’s health initiatives, including the NHLBI’s Heart Truth campaign and the AHA’s Go Red Campaign.

Dr. Hayes coordinates the annual WomenHeart Science and Leadership Symposium for Women with Heart Disease and has received numerous awards, including the 2022 Carolyn McCue Award for Woman Cardiologist of the Year. A nationally recognized educator, Dr.Hayes has developed various educational programs and co-produced the Emmy-nominated PBS show: Call to Action: Women and Heart Disease. Her research focuses on sex and gender-based cardiology, SCAD, and increasing diversity in medical research. A graduate of Northwestern University medical school, Dr. Hayes completed fellowships at Mayo Clinic and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the AHA. She actively serves in leadership roles across multiple professional organizations
