Set in the harrowing final days of World War II, the story follows Sergeant Kapp Johnson, a Black American soldier imprisoned in a Nazi castle and awaiting execution. But beneath the castle’s ancient stones, a chilling experiment is underway. Under the command of Colonel Otto Strass, the infamous Dr. Josef Weiss tests a resurrection serum on a young Polish boy–only for the child to rise again with unexpected side effects.
Chaos erupts as Hitler’s sudden suicide sends shockwaves through the Nazi stronghold. In the confusion, Kapp is accidentally given the serum. The results are staggering: armed with superhuman strength, Kapp escapes captivity, rejoins his battalion, and single-handedly defeats 280 enemy soldiers. Mortally wounded but unable to die, he becomes part of a new breed of soldiers caught between war and something far stranger.
As the serum spreads–to Weiss’s own nephew, German soldiers, and even Colonel Strass–each enhanced figure must grapple with their new reality. The war may be ending, but their story is just beginning.
Joyce Yvette Davis, a Detroit native and long-time editor, marks her fiction debut with this bold and haunting tale. Years in the making, “The Lebensborn Experiment” explores the limits of science, morality, and identity through a fresh and unforgettable lens.
