More on Isstories:

This marks the second musical collaboration between the two artists, who initially united in their long-standing advocacy for the release of Leonard Peltier, America’s longest-held Indigenous political prisoner — and DJ Free Leonard’s first cousin.

“I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing this for The People,” says DJ Free Leonard (Aaron Mirmalek).

A History of Solidarity Through Music

The relationship between Morello and DJ Free Leonard began in the mid-2000s when Morello — known for his revolutionary guitar work with Rage Against the Machine — placed the Free Peltier MySpace profile, created by DJ Free Leonard, in his Top 8 friends list in 2008.

In 2010, Morello supported DJ Free Leonard’s debut compilation project, “Free Leonard Peltier: Hip Hop’s Contribution to the Freedom Campaign,” by promoting it on the Axis of Justice website, a non-profit co-founded by Morello that merges music and grassroots activism.

Their first in-person meeting happened backstage at a benefit concert honoring Joe Hill, the legendary labor activist and songwriter executed in 1915. Hill, a Swedish-American labor organizer with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), became a symbol of working-class resistance and musical protest — a legacy that both Morello and DJ Free Leonard carry forward today.

The Song, The Sound, The Mission

“Communities Are Not Commodities” was written by DJ Free Leonard and produced by JX Beats in July 2024. The music draws from modern hip hop production with a politically-charged message that champions Indigenous rights and American Indian sovereignty.

The duo’s first song, “Traditional Way of Life,” was born during the pandemic when Morello emailed DJ Free Leonard a guitar riff that was transformed by Tope (producer for LaRussell) into a track featuring poetry by Leonard Peltier himself.

Now, “Communities Are Not Commodities” deepens the conversation, offering a musical protest against the commodification of land, culture, and Indigenous identity. The music video expands on these themes visually — and all proceeds from the track directly support public education around the case of Leonard Peltier and Indigenous social justice issues.

Legacy and Lineage

DJ Free Leonard is the son of Carol Ann Robideau, a survivor of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) crisis, and a long-time writer and advocate for her nephew Leonard Peltier. The family’s generational commitment to justice continues to resonate through music, storytelling, and action.
