In the interview, Lalaji discusses his personal and professional journey–from growing up in Hell’s Kitchen to leading one of the nation’s premier radiology groups–and highlights the causes that now define his mission beyond business.
Highlighting Mental Health as a Core Priority
“Success isn’t just about what you achieve,” Lalaji explains in the interview. “It’s also about what you enable others to achieve–and sometimes that starts with mental health.”
Lalaji’s foundation has been actively involved in supporting mental health initiatives, including programs at Wake Forest University. His advocacy comes at a time when mental health needs are growing rapidly. According to the World Health Organization, depression and anxiety cost the global economy over $1 trillion annually in lost productivity.
“We need to normalize the conversation around mental health,” Lalaji says. “In healthcare, in business, in sports–it’s everywhere. And too many people suffer in silence.”
Championing Women’s Leadership Through Sports
A lifelong volleyball player, Lalaji has also made women’s leadership in elite sports, particularly volleyball, a central cause.
“I was a setter in college volleyball,” he shares in the feature. “That position taught me something crucial–success often comes from setting others up to win.”
Lalaji’s foundation supports scholarships and leadership programs for women athletes, aiming to address gender gaps in sports leadership. Studies show that only 24% of all NCAA head coaching positions in women’s sports are held by women, despite growing participation rates among female athletes.
Encouraging Personal Responsibility and Community Action
Throughout the interview, Lalaji’s message is clear: success is not just personal–it’s communal.
“Stop chasing someone else’s version of success,” Lalaji advises. “Success is built on small, consistent actions–whether that’s mentoring an athlete, volunteering for a mental health cause, or simply showing up for your community.”
Take the First Step
Lalaji encourages others to take simple steps toward positive change:
- Volunteer locally for mental health organizations or youth sports programs.
- Mentor students or young professionals in your field.
- Support research by donating to causes such as cancer, ALS, or pediatric health.
“Small actions can create lasting impact,” he says. “You don’t need to be a CEO to start.”
