(Isstories Editorial):- Tomah, Wisconsin May 29, 2025 (Issuewire.com) – In her powerful and poignant novel “Five Days in February”, author Sheila Mulvenney brings readers into a world where a single moment can alter the course of a well-ordered life. Set against the chill of a February morning, the story follows Izzie, a teenage girl living a structured, comfortable life–until a chance encounter with Seb, a boy from a vastly different background, shifts everything.
What unfolds is a moving narrative that stretches over the course of five days–but the emotional impact vibrates far longer. As Izzie’s life collides with Seb’s, unexpected challenges, difficult truths, and profound self-discovery emerge. Through this deeply human story, Mulvenney explores how connection, compassion, and perspective can change not only how we see the world, but how we see ourselves.
“Did she wish she hadn’t met Seb?” the book asks. “She certainly didn’t like some of the consequences, but in every situation maybe there is something to be learned.” It is this theme–of learning, growth, and emotional courage–that lies at the heart of “Five Days in February.”

About the Author
Sheila Mulvenney’s unique insight into the emotional complexities of young people brings exceptional depth to her storytelling. With a background as a nurse, health visitor, and educator, Sheila has spent much of her career working with children in care across five different local authorities. Her compassion and understanding of vulnerable young people shine through in this novel, as it did in her previous works Overcoming Barriers to Learning and Make it Magnificent, which explore strategies for support and the power of mindset.
Working closely with children in public care, she became deeply aware of the challenges they face–challenges that often go unseen or misunderstood. Many teenagers, and even adults can be quick to judge without knowing the stories behind the struggles they face. Sheila wanted to create a narrative that offers a window into those hidden experiences, to foster empathy, understanding, and perhaps change a few perceptions along the way.
Currently training teachers and professionals on how to support vulnerable students, Sheila continues to advocate for empathy, resilience, and the transformative power of human connection–both in education and in literature.
Message from the Author
“Everyone’s story is different – sadly many children don’t grow up in a family where they are nurtured and loved for a whole host of reasons, I want everyone to appreciate that and not judge others as quickly but rather show empathy and support. But I also want to raise issues about growing up and teenage relationships with parents. As a mum and grandmother, I know it’s not easy – being a parent best job in the world but also the toughest.”
