Veteran dentist urges action on improving dental health access and visibility for underserved Canadians
(Isstories Editorial):- Toronto, Ontario Apr 15, 2025 (Issuewire.com) – Dr. Amir Haydarian, a seasoned dentist with nearly three decades of experience, is speaking out about an urgent yet often overlooked issue: the lack of accessible and affordable dental care for many Canadians. With rising costs and limited coverage, Dr. Haydarian is calling on both professionals and the public to help bring dental health into the broader healthcare conversation.

“Dental care is not a luxury–it’s essential,” says Dr. Haydarian. “Yet too many people in our communities avoid the dentist due to cost, fear, or lack of coverage. That’s a silent health crisis.”
According to the Canadian Dental Association, over one in five Canadians avoid visiting the dentist every year due to cost. Among low-income populations, 33% report not seeing a dentist in the past 12 months, and many children and seniors fall through the cracks of private insurance and public assistance programs.
“These aren’t just numbers,” Dr. Haydarian emphasizes. “They represent real people–kids who can’t concentrate in school because of tooth pain, seniors who can’t eat properly, or adults who skip care until the emergency room is their only option.”
Dr. Haydarian points out that oral health is directly tied to overall health. Poor dental hygiene and untreated gum disease are linked to heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory conditions. “When we ignore oral health, we’re ignoring whole-body health,” he says.
While he commends the efforts of charitable dental programs and mobile clinics, he believes greater visibility and support from the public are key. “We need to talk about this more. We need to advocate for dental coverage as part of healthcare reform. And we need to educate people that prevention costs less than treatment.”
As part of his outreach, Dr. Haydarian has volunteered with food banks and community centers since 2009 and recently launched a blog to offer free educational resources for patients and aspiring dental professionals.
But he’s clear that meaningful change isn’t only in the hands of policymakers–it’s also in the power of individuals.
Dr. Haydarian’s call to action:
- Learn about the link between oral and overall health.
- Talk to family and community members about the importance of regular dental visits.
- Support or volunteer with local clinics or organizations offering care to underserved populations.
- Advocate for expanded public coverage and inclusion of dental care in broader healthcare policies.
“Everyone can play a part,” Dr. Haydarian says. “You don’t have to be a dentist to help someone smile again–or to make sure they don’t suffer in silence.”
