The tennis world knows Novak Djokovic for his sheer aggressiveness and humorous mind. However, he is also an amazing athlete who cruised past Grigor Dimitrov. It was his first Miami Open final since he last played in 2016. He is about to reach his 100th career ATP title.
Djokovic will be facing Czech player Jakub Mensik in the finals on Sunday and the fans are waiting for the high-octane match. He just offered a spectacular performance in the semi-finals and won the match against American Taylor Fritz. He won on Friday by 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 7-6 (7-4) points of victory.
Dimitrov from Bulgaria did offer his best performance and broke Djokovic in the opening game but it was not enough to tame the 37-year-old beast who is not sold but is still in his prime. Trained by Coach Andy Murray, he broke back. Djokovic is currently the world’s top no.5 tennis player who won the first five straight games on a streak to win the set first.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion made sure to take every opportunity when he found his opponent shaky. Aggressive, arrogant, and a champion, Djokovic said, “Ever since I won my 99th, which was the Olympic Games in Paris, I’ve been playing with the prospect of winning the special 100 titles.”
He further added, “I’ve been trying to find that necessary and much-needed level of tennis that will put me in a position to fight for a trophy, a big trophy.” He appreciated his own training and said, “That’s what I’ve been doing this week, to be honest. I’ve been very happy with the way I prepared for the tournament, the way I’ve been playing. I haven’t dropped a set.” Before the finals, he created more anticipation by saying, “It’s a great opportunity. Let’s see what happens in two days.”
Dimitrov is currently 33 years old and he is more than capable. However, when it comes to tennis, Djokovic is too good in the game. He is the six-time Miami Open champion who offered only 4 to 5 chances of error while his opponent is a 32-time winning champion. “There were a couple of tight games in the last part of the match,” said Djokovic and further added, “It was 4-2, 30-30 and he missed a couple of forehands, and then I found some really good serves with new balls in the last game.”
Talking about the weather conditions, the player also said, “These were tricky conditions. Very swirly. The wind was not consistent, changing a lot. It’s not easy to find control of the ball.” However, he is also a master of strategies and he further said, “I tried to make him play in these conditions because he’s a clean hitter. I knew he’d struggle if I made him play an extra shot. He struggled with the first serve more than I did.”
If Djokovic manages to win his 100th ATP title, he will be making history in the game.
