More on Isstories:

The Medtronic InterStim® Center of Excellence distinction is a testament to healthcare providers who exemplify outstanding use of InterStim®, focusing on innovative treatments for patients suffering from overactive bladder, accidental bowel leakage, and urinary incontinence. Criteria for this accolade include exemplary use of the InterStim® system, dedication to patient care, established treatment plans, and board certification in urology, obstetrics, gynecology, or urogynecology.

Dr. Taylor was also selected as a Center of Excellence Distinguished Platinum Therapy Provider, a prestigious accolade acknowledging his impact on over 1,000 patient lives through the use of InterStim® therapy.

Dr. Taylor is a longtime proponent for the use of sacral neuromodulation in patients suffering from these debilitating disease states. His expertise and dedication have positioned Bladder & Bowel Institute at the forefront of patient care in this area. BBI’s approach of combining advanced therapies with compassionate care has made a significant difference in the lives of over five thousand patients.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Center of Excellence Distinguished Platinum Therapy Provider award and to see Bladder & Bowel Institute recognized as a Medtronic InterStim® Center of Excellence,” said Dr. Taylor. “These accolades are not just a recognition of our achievements but a testament to our unwavering commitment to enhancing patient lives. Each patient story has been a compelling journey towards reclaiming control and dignity, and it’s these stories that fuel our dedication. This recognition reaffirms our resolve to continue pushing for those suffering from overactive bladder and fecal incontinence. We’re not just treating conditions; we’re transforming lives, and this is just the beginning.”

InterStim® is a minimally invasive procedure that corrects the miscommunication between the pelvic floor and the brain that may be responsible for bladder and bowel control problems.

InterStim® works by delivering a small electrical impulse that blocks out those inappropriate nerve signals, letting the bladder communicate with the brain without interference, therefore restoring normal communication. And it is thought to work in this same way for bowel control.

“The most remarkable part of InterStim® is that we can first do a quick test to figure out if the therapy may work for a patient long term. The test can be done in about 5 minutes at our facility, and it allows patients to trial the therapy for 3 – 4 days to see if it works for them” said Dr. Taylor. “Patients can then move forward with the long-term therapy, a 20 – 30 minute outpatient procedure our doctors perform in the Medicare-certified surgical suite located right in our facility.”

About Overactive Bladder

Overactive bladder (OAB) significantly impacts quality of life and can negatively affect social activities, exercise and cause disruptive nighttime voiding.1,2 Many sufferers are frustrated and embarrassed and limit their lives socially, professionally, and personally.3 However, 45% don’t seek treatment and as many as seven in 10 stop using medications within six months due to intolerable side effects or unsatisfying results.4,5,6

Evidence points to OAB being caused by a miscommunication between the bladder and brain.7 Sacral neuromodulation, or gentle stimulation of the sacral nerves, delivered by the InterStim® system is thought to normalize the brain-bladder communication pathway thereby restoring bladder function and alleviating symptoms. Restored function is defined as 50% reduction in dysfunctional voiding symptoms from baseline. The InterStim® system is the only sacral neuromodulation solution proven to demonstrate sustained five-year efficacy and quality of life improvements for OAB.8

About Fecal Incontinence

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a distressing and disruptive chronic condition that is characterized by the inability to control bowel movements, which results in frequent accidents and leakage. People with FI report more depression and embarrassment, as well as lower quality of life compared to those without FI.9 Even though FI is treatable, 8.5 out of 10 adults haven’t even told their doctor about their FI.10 The InterStim® system is the only sacral neuromodulation solution proven to demonstrate sustained five-year efficacy and quality of life improvements for FI.11
