He then completed his residency in surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1971, and his residency in orthopedic surgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1974.

Furthering his training, he completed his sports medicine fellowship working as a team physician for multiple sports franchises, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Miami Hurricanes, Texas Southern University, and Florida International University. 

Trained in cutting-edge techniques, Dr. Bennett is board certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Also, his experience in treating a large number of cases in sports medicine has helped earn him the distinguished Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.

Continuously taking part in ongoing research, he is a member of several medical societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the International Society of Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy, and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, the Texas Medical Association, and the Harris County Medical Society.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system.
